Marijuana Leads to ‘Complete Remission’ of Crohn’s Disease with No Side Effects, New Study Shows

Crohn’s disease is a type of inflammatory bowel disease which affects thousands of people around the world. It’s a pretty difficult disease to get rid of and manifests through diarrhea, weight loss, abdominal pain and cramps and chronic fatigue. According to statistics, more than 3 million people in the USA were suffering from Crohn’s disease as of August 2017 and the numbers are constantly climbing up.

Sadly, there is no cure for Crohn’s disease. The disease can only be controlled through a variety of lifestyle and diet changes as well as reduction of stress. However, a growing number of experts are becoming more and more convinced that the best remedy against the disease is cannabis. There’s an ongoing debate about the medicinal uses of the herb, but unlike before, governments around the world are not so opposed to the idea of legalizing the herb.

The main cause of Crohn’s disease is yet to be identified. The only thing scientists know that our immune system cells trigger the disease by attacking healthy cells and beneficial bacteria in the gut, which causes chronic inflammation. Although there are a number of treatments that may or may not help, scientists are hoping that cannabis can become the base for a treatment that can bring renewed hope to Crohn’s disease patients.

Crohn’s disease is a serious problem and can significantly affect your way of life. In fact, it may interfere with your work and common daily activities and needs a lot of management. The symptoms of the disease vary from person to person and can be mild or severe. In some people, the symptoms develop slowly over time, while striking suddenly in others. The most common symptoms are fatigue, blood in the stool, fever, mouth sores, sudden weight loss, loss of appetite and pain in the anal area. In some cases, Crohn’s disease causes inflammation of the skin, joints, eyes, liver or bile ducts.

At the moment, the scientific community is researching various ways of treating the disease. However, there’s no unified treatment yet, as different approaches work for different people. Inflammatory bowel diseases affect people differently, so patients are often taking a variety of anti-inflammatory drugs in order to stop the progress of the disease.

The study

A recent study published in the Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology magazine illustrated how cannabis can help Crohn’s disease patients. The study was done on 21 patients suffering from the IBD – 13 adult men and 8 women with an average age of 40. All the patients tried suppressing the disease in various ways previous, but none of them worked. The patients were divided into 2 groups – one was given 115 mg. of cannabis with THC they were supposed to smoke twice per day, while the other group got cannabis without the active substance.

After 8 weeks, the results were in and the doctors were shocked. 5 of the 11 patients in the THC group saw remission, while 10 out of 11 saw a significant reduction of the symptoms. All the patients from this group had better appetite and were able to sleep better as well and the scientist involved in the research are sure it’s because of the THC, as the results from the other group weren’t so great.

Our bodies naturally produce THC in the form of cannabinoids. Research has shown that people suffering from Crohn’s disease have a low level of these compounds, which can be restored with the help of cannabis. This reduces inflammation in the digestive system (and throughout the body) which can treat the symptoms of the difficult disease. The study was done on a pretty small scale, but scientists are pretty hopeful that it can be a base for further research which may unearth the cure for this inflammatory disease.
