A New Disease is Spreading in the US
All parents know that their children are like magnets for viruses, bacteria and bugs. There’s no escaping it, kids contract all kinds of diseases and in a way that’s how they strengthen their immunity. But aside from the usual culprits, the Hearty Soul warns of a new, less-known disease that has been spreading across the US. It’s caught parents off guard and many don’t even know it exists.
The disease is called hand, foot and mouth disease and it originates in Asia. It was first recognized back in 2012 but this year it seems to have travelled to the States. The state of Alabama issued a warning of the disease becoming prevalent in the area. They believe it was brought to the US by travelers from Asia who didn’t even know they have it.
The Hand, Feet and Mouth Disease – What is it?
The Hearty Soul explains that the disease is caused by and enterovirus. It’s highly contagious and spread via kissing, sneezing and coughing. Any person who comes into contact with and infected person’s mucus or spit can become infected. The first symptoms appear in a few days after contracting the virus. This is why many people spread the disease to others without even knowing they have it themselves. Once the symptoms kick in, they’ve already infected others.
The disease is most common between children but adults can also contract it. The symptoms include sore throat, tiredness, fever and sores on the mouth, hands and feet. The sores sometimes appear on the legs and bottom as well.
The first thing to remember if you’ve caught the virus is to stay at home in order to prevent spreading the virus to others. The same goes for your kids, keep them at home until they’ve overcome the virus. Since it’s a virus and not a bacterium, the usual antibiotic treatment doesn’t give results. The virus will go away on its own in a week or so, so it’s best to leave it as it is. In the meantime, here are a few advices on how to overcome the disease easier and faster and alleviate the symptoms:
- Get plenty of rest.
- Hydrate your body with plenty of water.
- Don’t eat acidic food as the can cause an irritation on the mouth sores.
- Consume honey to ease the sore throat.
- Wash your hands regularly.
- Strengthen your immune system with natural remedies like garlic and turmeric.
- Change the bedsheets regularly.
The disease can be especially dangerous for persons with a weaker immune system so they need to be extra careful. If they contract the virus, they should seek professional help to avoid health problems.
