Did you know that a great number of farmers in India have started using Coca Cola and Pepsi as a cheaper substitute for pesticides? The CSE reported that drinks like Pepsi and Cola are loaded with pesticide deposits, which is why many farmers in India have started using them to eliminate pests. They’re a much cheaper alternative to conventional pesticides.
You’ve probably already heard about the cleaning powers of Coca Cola. There have been numerous articles and videos to demonstrate how powerful this drink is against tile grout, oil stains and paint stains. In 2013 the CSE analyzed the samples from 12 different soft drinks and discovered that in all of them there are traces of 4 toxic pesticides and insecticides.
The Study and Its Results
The study revealed that there were traces of 4 pesticides and insecticides such as malathion, chlorpyrifos, lindane and DDT. The researchers discovered that the chlorpyrifos amounts were 42 times higher than allowed, the malathion amounts were 87 times higher while the lindane amounts were 21 times higher. They also discovered that Coca Cola had 45 times higher amount of contaminants while Pepsi 37 times. Moreover, the study further proved that these amounts could potentially lead to damage of the nervous and reproductive system, birth problems and immunity system problems.
The Coca Cola Company versus the Farmers
The Coca Cola Company strongly denies the use of its product as a pesticide and is furious with the farmers that use it for that purpose. Moreover, agricultural specialists claim that it’s a big mistake to use coca cola as a replacement for pesticides. They say that when the soft drink is applied to crops the sweet taste attracts red ants which feed on the insects’ larva.
